A Sicilian Journey

Introduction

Our tours to Sicily range from several days to several weeks in length. We arrange trips focused on both the west and east coasts. The following itinerary is an example of an itinerary combining both east and west, and the full spectrum of art and history on the island.

Day 1 Palermo

Your flight arrives in Palermo where you are met by your driver and guide. Transfer to a private villa where you spend 5 nights. Enjoy a short introductory walk in the late afternoon with a visit to a private palazzo, one of the hidden gems of the city. Dinner is in the private gardens of your villa.

Day 2 Palermo

After breakfast your guide picks you up and you head into the heart of the old city for a walking tour: Norman mosaics, grand baroque interiors and local fish markets await. After lunch in a hidden away trattoria, visit two of the most beautiful churches in the city. Private visit and drinks in the evening at Palermo’s most beautiful private palazzo.

Day 3 Segesta & Erice

Drive out into the dramatic landscape to the south of Palermo and spend the morning exploring the Greek temple and theatre at Segesta, among the most beautifully situated buildings in Sicily. Lunch will be in Erice followed by a walk in this enchanting hilltop town. Return to Palermo and dinner at the villa.

Day 4 Cefalu & Monreale

Visit Cefalu and enjoy a private visit to the mosaics in the Duomo, followed by a historical walk and lunch on the sea. Return to the villa for a siesta and then drive to Monreale in the early evening for a once in a lifetime private visit to the Duomo, which contains the greatest cycle of Norman era mosaics in the world.

Day 5 Palermo

Visit two of the most beguiling villas in Sicily privately, filled with strange and marvelous sculptures. After lunch your guide will show you around the port area of Palermo, visiting the regional museum and beautiful oratories. Dinner will be at Palermo’s finest restaurant.

Day 6 Agrigento

Depart the villa with your guide and driver and head south, stopping for lunch at a private wine estate for Sicily’s finest home cooking and a tour of the vineyards. Settle into your luxury hotel overlooking the Greek temples of Agrigento. After a siesta, your guide will take you on an early evening tour of the temples, then dinner by the sea.

Day 7 Piazza Armerina & Syracuse

After a visit to the archaeological museum, you depart for Piazza Armerina and visit the Roman mosaics at Villa Casale, the largest and most important scheme of Roman mosaics in Europe. Continue on to Syracuse, via another Roman villa missed by most tourists and settle into your boutique hotel. Dinner is at a delicious restaurant overlooking the sea.

Day 8 Syracuse

Spend the morning in the Archaeological Zone where your guide will bring to life the wealth of archaeological finds. Lunch with fabulous views out over the bay, followed by a historical walk around Ortygia; highlights include Caravaggio and the Duomo. Private dinner and drinks in a private palazzo with a tour from the owners.

Day 9 Baroque towns & Taormina

Spend a day visiting the beautiful baroque towns of south eastern Sicily. Begin in Noto with its perfect town plan and on to lunch in Sicily’s most celebrated restaurant. Spend the afternoon exploring Ragusa and Modica, paying a visit to a chocolate factory. Finish in 5 star luxury at Sicily’s finest hotel in Taormina .

Day 10 Taormina

After a day off enjoying the hotel, venture up in the early evening to the Roman theatre for fabulous views before having dinner privately in the gardens of an old monastery.

Day 11 Catania

Drive to Catania, the richest city in Sicily for baroque architecture and enjoy a historical walk finishing at a Roman amphitheatre. After lunch in a fabulous fish restaurant, you do a private visit to the city’s most important private palazzo, guided by the owners.
