Beyond Amsterdam

Delft is the birthplace of Vermeer and home to the 17th century Delft School of Painting. It makes for a wonderful day trip from Amsterdam. Copying Chinese designs, Delftware nods to the power of 17th century Dutch merchant trade and is a fascinating early encounter between East and West.

The Hague is home to the sensational Mauritshuis which celebrates The Dutch Golden Age with works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Hals and Steen. The Gemeentemuseum has a peerless collection of paintings by Piet Mondrian.

The University town of Leiden is the birthplace of Rembrandt. The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden houses an outstanding Ancient Egyptian collection. Leiden’s Gothic Pieterskerk is where The Pilgrim Fathers settled en route to establishing Plymouth Colony in America.
