This is one of Italy’s least travelled regions and is full of surprises. Four mountain ranges with beautiful hill top towns perched on their edges make for some of the most picturesque spots in the country. Entering the small sleepy towns of Gerace, Stilo, Rende, Rossano, Taverna and Altomonte are like walking onto stage sets of history. The larger cities of Cosenza and Reggio di Calabria boast superb museums. The latter has an archaeological museum the envy of the world with its Riace Bronzes, among the most beautiful statues ever recovered from antiquity. Tropea, Pizzo and Vibo Valentia also make for rewarding visits. The food is excellent in these southern reaches and locals could not be friendlier. For those in search of ‘hidden’ Italy, look no further.
