Introduction

Few cities are as richly layered as Rome. The example tour below is just one of many that we organise to the city. Caravaggio's paintings provide a portal into the incredible wealth of Rome's art and history.

Day 1 Arrival

On arrival you are met by your guide and chauffeur and settle into your 5 star luxury hotel with wonderful views over the city. Spend your first evening on a private visit to one of Rome’s greatest palaces and enjoy a private dinner. Your guide will begin laying out background themes.

Day 2 Roman painting

Today you explore the history of painting in Rome from the Renaissance to the Counter Reformation, setting the scene for Caravaggio’s work beginning at the end of the 16th century. You will enjoy private visits to two more of Rome’s palaces, with one visit led by a family member.

Day 3 Caravaggio’s Rome

Start with a historical walk to hidden parts of the city, where the artist spent much of his time. As you trace the patterns of his daily life, learn about an array of periods of Rome’s history from Roman antiquity and medieval to the Renaissance. Enjoy an afternoon visit to a painter’s studio to learn about the artist’s painting technique.

Day 4 Caravaggio’s Churches

Today you explore Caravaggio’s greatest paintings with visits to a number of churches, including Santa Maria del Popolo, Sant'Agostino, and San Luigi dei Francesi. This will also be an opportunity to see hidden corners of some of Rome’s most beautiful areas. In the evening, enjoy a box at the opera.

Day 5 Caravaggio’s Palaces

Devote a whole day to behind the scenes visits at palaces in Rome. Highlights will include a visit to a strictly private palace which contains an early work by Caravaggio and private visits to two of Rome’s most famous palaces, which contain major works by the artist. Dinner will be at our favourite Roman trattoria.
